These interrelations demonstrate the mutual implication of the three main bodies of Freud’s texts—his metapsychological texts, his cultural texts, and his clinical texts.

This issue began to press itself upon me as I pursued interdisciplinary academic work in the humanities and the social sciences while I was engaged in psychoanalytically based psychotherapeutic work. It first made itself apparent to me as I repeatedly encountered, within these two different frameworks, markedly differing uses and evaluations of the category of primitivity.

The chapter argues that Totem and Taboo, by virtue of its function as the “origin myth” of psychoanalysis, provides the paradigmatic referent for Freud’s metapsychological descriptions of the inauguration of the agencies of the psyche. This, in turn, provides the background for a demonstration of the pervasiveness throughout Freud’s cultural and metapsychological texts of social evolutionary notions, and of the continued entanglement within psychoanalysis of the anthropological and psychological meanings of primitivity.
