With the acquisition of Starwood by Marriott, a question has been lingering around how their rewards programs will change. While that is still yet to be finalized, as Marriott and Starwood work on finalizing the details and as members head into the 2017 calendar year, a question remains around which rewards program to stay loyal to throughout 2016. To help with this, you can now link you SPG and Marriott accounts.
What are the benefits of this?
- Automatic status match
- For example, if you are platinum on Marriott but not SPG, you will automatically get matched to platinum status on SPG. However, you will not get the benefits of SPG’s ambassador status or the 4th point benefit of staying 75 nights with SPG properties
- Transfer points between programs
- You can convert 1 SPG point into 3 Marriott points or convert 3 Marriott points into 1 SPG point. This helps when redeeming points at either SPG or Marriott properties
The above hopefully helps alleviates concerns about which program to be loyal to as Marriott and SPG figure out how they will merge the two reward programs into one most likely to take effect in 2018.
